There are songs we hear that live within us.
Is it the sound, the beat, the words, when we hear it, who we hear it with? Is it all these things?
Driving into school today I heard a song (during the 80's hour) I hadn't heard in years. I'd forgotten how much I loved it. It brightened my whole day, and it got me thinking... how can I use this in writing? A-hah! Notebook entries!
So, here you go. WRITE FROM THE MUSIC.
Take time to think of your favorite songs. Scroll through your ipod if necessary.
Record your favorite lines. Is it the refrain or a line of verse? Make a collection of them in your notebook.
Use the lines as beginnings of stories or writing passages for the next week. See what comes of it.
Here of some of my favorites:
Freedom has a scent, like the top of a newborn baby's head. - U2
He was born in the summer of his 27th year, going home to a place he'd never been before. - John Denver
Right smack-dab in the middle of town, I've found a paradise, just about trouble -proof. Up on the roof. - Carol King/ James Taylor
It's a beautiful day. Don't let it get away - U2
There are many others, but I need to sit and listen a while. For many, I don't know the artist, so I couldn't really record it here.
Get at least five so you can work with this for a couple of days. Use one a day. Write about it. I'm going to start withe 27th year one because I love the concept, and I have come home to places I hadn't actually been before. Life's mysteries.
Go. Have fun with it. Listen to your songs and write from there!
