Think of your favorite stories. How do they end?
I’ve been thinking about endings a great deal. I had to write three endings to my short story before I found the right one, my summer class is ending today, and snow pea and lettuce season is over in my garden. Each of those endings leaves me with a different thought.
Endings have feelings. Again, think of your favorite stories. Sometimes there is a sense of loss, surprise or shock, and sometimes a very satisfying happiness. Endings can be all of those things. Good endings bring us resolutions.
Ask yourself these two questions and write about them today:
What are your favorite endings?
Why? (Really explore this one! The answers here will make you a better writer.)
Remember, you can always go further. I may take a turn with this. There’s a book I finished recently that did not leave me with a satisfied ending. As I closed the book I asked myself how I would have liked it to end. Experiment with your endings.
You may find something great.
