Metaphor practice is an excellent way to improve your writing and your thinking. The human brain loves to connect and draw comparisons, so use it to your advantage.
Try the following practice in your notebook this week:
1. Make a list of nouns (or borrow from the list below)
2. add the word are, is, or of... and an unrelated noun
Field of glass (hockey/ skating rink before the blades have scratched it)
Butterflies of wisdom (that inkling in your belly when you're on the brink of discovery!)
3. Use them in your writing. Start an entry with the phrase and see where it goes.
